A Backward Approach
Most dance pieces are choreographed to existing music, but we decided to turn that process on its head. When brought on this project, the choreography had already been set. I would watch the company’s rehearsal footage and compose as if I were creating a most intricate film score, finding the phrasing and highlighting the subtle details of every movement. This was perhaps my most challenging work yet; not only did the music have to support the story of the dance, but also had to inspire the movement within the live dancers. As dancers and composer reacted to each other and refined the piece in rehearsal, a true marriage of music and movement emerged.
